SpankOut Day April 30th : Honor Children by Learning Effective Discipline

Since l998, thousands of organizations and individuals throughout the U.S. and foreign countries have sponsored informational programs on effects of physical punishment of children and alternatives for parents. The Center for Effective Discipline and EPOCH-USA founded this observance and is supporting programs that will take place on SpankOut Day April 30th 2010.

Columbus, OH, April 30, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Surveys indicate that about one-half of parents do not use physical punishment. Why haven’t all parents stopped hitting children? “Many parents don’t know about or don’t understand how to use alternatives to physical punishment,” says Deb Sendek, Co-chair of SpankOut Day April 30th. “Our mission is to give parents non-violent and effective discipline methods so they won’t feel the need to spank their children. That’s what is happening on SpankOut Day April 30th.”

The Center for Effective Discipline and EPOCH-USA (End Physical Punishment of Children) sponsor SpankOut Day USA April 30th to provide information to parents and caretakers of children on positive discipline. They seek to end physical punishment of children in order to reduce child abuse and to give children a right all adults have to be free from physical harm.

On SpankOut Day April 30th, the Center for Effective Discipline praises all parents who raise children with non-violent discipline and asks all parents who still use physical punishment to read about and discuss positive discipline and seek information from community agencies. Since the inception of SpankOut Day April 30th in l998, hundreds of non-profit agencies in the U.S. have received mini-grants from the Center for Effective Discipline to support informational programs on positive discipline of children and effects of physical punishment. More than 10,000 parents have participated in SpankOut Day programs since they began.

“Evaluations of SpankOut Day programs show that they successfully teach parents effects of physical punishment of children and alternatives,” says Nadine Block, SpankOut Day Co-chair and founder. Block notes that physical punishment of children is banned in all settings for children in 25 countries. She says, “We hope that EVERYDAY will be SpankOut Day in our country.”

Providing appropriate and adequate discipline to children is of great concern to parents. A mountain of research findings shows harm from physical punishment and supports ending its use. These findings have not reached or haven’t been heeded by many parents. “Spare the rod, spoil the child” is a mantra for many parents. Two large research reports released in the last few months showed that physical punishment is linked to increased aggression in children.
