South Nassau Names Director of Motility Studies to Detect GERD

Meyer Blumstein, MD, has nearly 25 years experience in internal medicine and gastroenterology and is a specialist in endoscopy, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and inflammatory bowel disease.

Oceanside, NY, May 07, 2010 --(PR.com)-- South Nassau Communities Hospital has named Meyer Blumstein, MD, director of gastrointestinal motility testing. Dr. Blumstein is board-certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology.

“Dr. Blumstein has expertise in the field of esophageal motility and we are confident that his acumen, experience and leadership will continue South Nassau’s tradition of providing high quality in the specialty of diagnosing and treating digestive tract motility complications,” said Linda Efferen, M.D., chief medical officer at South Nassau.

Dr. Blumstein has nearly 25 years experience in internal medicine and gastroenterology and is a specialist in endoscopy, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and inflammatory bowel disease. He has been listed in the acclaimed guide Top Doctors: New York Metro Area published by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., which spotlights the top 10 percent of primary specialty care physicians in the tri-state New York area. An assistant professor of medicine at Albert Einstein College School of Medicine, Dr. Blumstein earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 1986 and completed fellowship training in gastroenterology in 1991 at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY. Dr. Blumstein is a resident of West Hempstead, NY, and practices gastroenterology and internal medicine with South Shore Internal Medicine Associates based in Lynbrook, NY.

Motility is the spontaneous movement of the four parts of the gastrointestinal tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine (colon). An example of motility is peristalsis, which is the contraction of smooth muscles in the esohpagus that help move food into the stomach. Manometry is used to determine if the motility in the esophagus is abnormal. The data it produces is used by physicians and surgeons to determine if there are motility problems and the most effective treatment for the cause of the abnormality.

The Motility Center at South Nassau uses a range of motility tests to diagnose and evaluate esophageal motility disorders. This includes a state-of-the-art, high-resolution solid state manometry machine, esophageal PH monitoring and ultrasound imaging. The program’s physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and research assistants have specialized training in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with esophageal motility disorders.
