About the Man & Woman of the Year Campaign
The competition began in San Francisco twenty years ago. The first event was held in remembrance of John Spencer, a valued Hastings Department Store employee who died of leukemia at the age of 39. It was in John’s memory that Hastings began supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Since 1990, LLS chapters across the nation have added the Man & Woman of the Year Campaign. Now hundreds of men and women in over 60 cities vie for the title each year in a ten-week fundraising competition. Over the last twenty years, candidates nationwide have raised $53 million for blood cancer research and patient services.
