)-- On the occasion of Environment Day (June 5th) and Le Meridien Amman’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and supporting environmental causes, 22 associates of different positions devoted four hours to cleaning up Naour Forest in Amman, which stretches over 20 Donums and collected 180 KGs of garbage. It is worth mentioning that Le Meridien Amman is a subsidiary of Starwood Hotels and Resorts, which organized a global campaign to celebrate Environment Day through planting trees, cleaning forests and beaches.
On that note, Mr. Tareq Derbas; General Manager of Le Meridien Amman, commented on this initiative by saying: “The simple daily activities have a major impact on the environment. This initiative draws attention to the individual’s contribution in creating a clean atmosphere, healthy environment and uncontaminated natural resources.”
Mr. Fuad Srouji; the general manager of Al-Shajarah NGO presented a brief to Le Meridien Amman associates on the status of forests in Jordan as well as the challenges they face. Some of those challenges are: illegal logging, fires, and over-grazing. Mr. Srouji stated that the forested area in Jordan does not exceed 0.09% of the total area of the Kingdom. He added that 0.04% of this area is of natural forests while 0.05% is planted. It should be noted here that internationally it is estimated that in order for a country to have a healthy climate a minimum of 4% of its total area should be covered with forests. In Jordan, 13.4% of the total area of the kingdom can be forested.
