Majority of Americans Aren't Supporting USA Soccer Team at World Cup, CouponCodes4u Study Says

Less than a fifth of the public are supporting USA at the World Cup in South Africa, according to a poll by one of America's leading discount websites.

New York, NY, June 29, 2010 --(PR.com)-- A study by one of America's leading coupon code websites, CouponCodes4u, has revealed that the majority of Americans, 79%, have no interest in supporting their country at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Englishman Mark Pearson, founder of CouponCodes4U and of the UK's leading discount website MyVoucherCodes, commissioned the survey in the build-up to the USA's first game against England on June 12th, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

Actor Brad Pitt is among those bidding to have the States host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022, having joined the USA Bid Committee, but despite this, the general public is still uninterested in the sport of soccer.

Of those that said they had 'no interest' in the national soccer team, 85% said they had never watched a full 90 minute game, while 61% said they thought the game wasn't 'tough' enough.

The survey asked the respondents to select their favorite sports from a selection of various disciplines, and the following top ten was then collated to demonstrate this, ranked by the percentage of people that said they'd include the sport in their list of 'favorites.'

Football - 72%
Baseball - 65%
NASCAR - 60%
Ice Hockey - 57%
Basketball - 53%
Golf - 44%
Tennis - 38%
Soccer - 16%
Rugby - 9%
Horse racing - 5%

Just 14% of the 4,329 respondents could name a member of the USA soccer squad, while 87% recognized former LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham.

Mark Pearson, Managing Director of CouponCodes4U had the following to say,

"Being an Englishman, the World Cup has so far dominated the media, and the whole country is buzzing with hope that the national team can deliver, but unfortunately, my American staff don't seem to share the same passion.

"We've noticed a huge difference in the number of people searching for World Cup related retail discounts for both our UK and USA sites, so I wanted to see just how significant the apathy to the event was across the Atlantic - it turns out, very!"
