Citymeals-on-Wheels and PAWS NY Announce Partnership

Citymeals-on-Wheels and PAWS NY, two nonprofit organizations in New York City, announce a new partnership to provide services to seniors with pets.

New York, NY, July 09, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Citymeals-on-Wheels has announced a new partnership with PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support) NY that will provide homebound elderly New Yorkers with much-needed pet care assistance.

Citymeals-on-Wheels provides home delivered meals to frail aged New Yorkers on weekends, holidays and times of emergency. Seventy-three percent of these older people live alone, and many do not see anyone during the day except their meal deliverer. Citymeals staff and volunteers have noted that numerous meal recipients have pets to provide companionship. Yet, these older people often struggle with tasks such as walking their dogs, feeding their pets, and other basic pet care tasks. As a result they are at risk of losing their sole source of camaraderie.

PAWS NY, a grassroots organization that was established in New York City in 2008, has been training volunteers to provide one-on-one pet care assistance to needy individuals, including senior citizens. By offering these services, vulnerable pet owners are able to keep their pets and continue to experience the proven physical and psychological benefits of animal companionship while the number of pets surrendered to already overcrowded New York City animal shelters is reduced.

By partnering together, Citymeals-on-Wheels volunteers, who are already making home visits to homebound elderly, will be able to get training and support from PAWS NY – enabling them to provide pet care assistance to seniors with pets. PAWS NY, which also collects in-kind donations, is establishing a pet pantry in cooperation with Citymeals to provide pet food and supplies to seniors who are struggling to feed their pets as well as themselves. Citymeals/PAWS volunteers will be able to provide services such as dog walking, cat litter maintenance, and pet feeding. The partnership will initially focus on serving homebound elderly on New York’s Lower East Side, an area with a large population of low-income, immigrant, and elderly residents.
