Pets for Patriots Launches in Texas

Partners with local animal shelters and veterinarians to help veterans honorably adopt adult shelter pets.

Austin, TX, July 23, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Pets for Patriots, Inc., a not-for-profit that connects loyal adult shelter pets with our country's loyal service men and women, is joining forces with animal shelters and veterinarians in Bastrop, Texas to increase the adoption of adult shelter pets. An estimated four million shelter dogs and cats are put to death every year, in spite of numerous studies proving the emotional and physical benefits of companion pets.

Working with Pets for Patriots, the Bastrop County Animal Shelter gives veterans, wounded soldiers and their families the gift of unconditional friendship and love, and provides homeless pets a second chance at life. Bastrop Veterinary Hospital supports the charity’s mission to make military pet ownership affordable by providing a minimum 10% discount off all veterinary fees for the life of the adopted pet.

Individuals are eligible from any branch of the United States military and at any stage of their careers – active, reserve, retired or veteran – and those transitioning to civilian life. Eligible adoptions include a dog or cat, at least two years old, as well as large dogs and special needs pets. Bastrop County Animal Shelter, located near the Army National Guard Training base, will help any participating military personnel in the community find a needs- and lifestyle-appropriate pet.

“Our goal is to accelerate the adoption of harder-to-place pets that still have years of love and life to give,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots. “Working with not-for-profit animal welfare organizations and veterinarians in the community, we can get these animals rehomed in a sustainable way, to the benefit of pet and person.”

Companion pets provide real physical and emotional benefits to owners and their families, including those coping with mild post-combat stress or traumatic brain as a result of their military service. Pets for Patriots is a national partner of the Real Warriors Campaign, which aims to reduce the stigma of PTSD and other psychological trauma among combat veterans.

“Our program is ideal for a wounded soldier who doesn’t qualify for a service animal, but would benefit from a pet friend,” says Zimmerman. “As well as to veterans who might simply enjoy the friendship and company of a dog or cat.”

Service members interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service. Approval takes only a day or two, after which veterans can visit any of the member shelters in the Denver metro area for assistance in choosing their new best friend.
