Radleigh Leads the Way

Derby, United Kingdom, August 21, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Derby-based developer Radleigh is at the forefront of a partnership initiative aimed at training the young construction workers of the future.

The company is working closely with Derby College, Construction Skills and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to provide work experience placements which could ultimately lead to permanent jobs.

And it is actively encouraging subcontractors to join them in its commitment to training by offering placements in a range of construction-related disciplines.

Under the supervision of its workforce, Radleigh has been running a pilot scheme at its Scholars’ Gate development site in Mickleover so Derby College trainees can pursue further trade qualifications.

As part of its strategy, the business has offered one week's work experience to three students on Level One joinery, brickwork, electrical skills, painting and decorating, plastering, planning and professional construction skills courses.

So far 21 young people have taken part, of whom between seven and nine will shortly be offered employment with Radleigh or its subcontractors when they move on to Level Two of their college courses in September.

And in a further boost to job prospects, some of the participating subcontractors have been so impressed with the quality and attitude of the trainees that they are now offering two apprenticeships.

Radleigh’s input was highlighted at a regional HCA conference in Leicester, at which other contractors were encouraged to replicate the scheme by working with local training providers.

Chris Neve, joint managing director of Radleigh, based at Pride Park, said: “The benefits to young people, the construction industry and the communities they serve cannot be stated highly enough.

"These apprenticeship programmes will have a significant effect on shaping the future of the construction industry and, by investing in this talent now, we will have the skills and capacity in place when economic upturn comes.

“The apprentices will also help to influence generations of architects, builders, designers and our highly skilled workforce.

“Radleigh has always championed the importance of training and works closely with local schools, colleges and Derby University.

“Earlier this year we appointed Zella Ferguson as Apprenticeship Co-ordinator and a lot has been achieved in a short time.

“We are delighted to have received such a positive response from both the candidates and employers in each category and we are confident that we will be sponsoring similar events in the years to come.”

Steve Logan, Derby College vice principal and head of the Round House said that by approaching Derby College, Radleigh had shown a vision and commitment that had inspired many subcontractors to realise the real benefits and potential that can be harnessed through apprenticeships.

He added: “Feedback from contractors and students has been fantastic and I am confident that a number of students will be offered employment as apprentices as a result.

“I cannot thank Radleigh and their subcontractors enough for their enthusiasm and commitment to supporting young people through this initiative.”
