Distinguished Biologist Barry Chernoff M.S. ’76 to Lecture at Adelphi University on October 13, 2010

Ichthyologist Barry Chernoff will reflect on his research about South American fish and conservation efforts.

Garden City, NY, September 30, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Adelphi University is pleased to host Professor Barry Chernoff M.S. ’76, who will speak about his work as an ichthyologist in South America. He will deliver “A Biologist in the Waters of the Amazon: Fish, Monsters, Diseases and Conservation,” on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. in the Ruth S. Harley University Center’s Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event is sponsored by the Joseph J. Napolitano Memorial Lecture, and is free and open to the public.

Over the past 20 years, he has collected more than 250,000 fish specimens from various bodies of water in South America. The focus of his research is the conservation of aquatic ecosystems, and the evolutionary biology of South American freshwater fish. He has published more than 85 scholarly papers and books relating to this field. Currently, he and his students are researching heavy metal exposure to fish in Connecticut rivers, and are expanding their research to include aquatic invertebrate ecology and community structure.

Previously, Dr. Chernoff was an associate curator of the department of zoology, and curator of fishes at the Field Museum in Chicago for 17 years. At the museum, he worked to trace South American specimens back millions of years, to a time when they shared the Earth with dinosaurs. He is currently the Robert Schumann Professor of Environmental Studies at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Dr. Chernoff has also served as a member, vice-chairman, and chairman of the United States National Committee for the International Union of Biological Sciences, appointed by the United States National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Chernoff received a B.S. in biology and a B.A. in environmental studies from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, an M.S. in biology from Adelphi University, and a Ph.D. in natural resources from the University of Michigan.
