Hoboken, NJ, October 02, 2010 --(PR.com)-- MABPOM 2010, the 37th Annual Mid-Atlantic Bight Physical Oceanography and Meteorology Meeting, hosted by the Center for Maritime Systems at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ will be held Tuesday, October 26 through Wednesday, October 27. Only two weeks remain to register for MABPOM 2010. Presentation abstracts are due October 11th 2010.

“The meeting brings together the best minds in ocean physics to discuss our coastal waters,” says Alan Blumberg, Director of the Center for Maritime Systems at Stevens. “It will allow us to showcase our campus and facilities.”

Dr. Blumberg and Dr. Nickitas Georgas, a senior research engineer at the Center for Maritime Systems, are extremely excited to announce that during the Tuesday night reception, Dr. Bruce Parker will present his new book, “The Power of the Sea: Tsunamis, Storm Surges, Rogue Waves, and our Quest to Predict Disasters,” (Palgrave MacMillan, 304 pages) due to be released that same day (pre-order is available at major online retailers). The book tells the story of our long struggle to understand the physics of the sea in order to predict when the sea will unleash its power against us. Dr. Bruce B. Parker is a Visiting Professor at the Center for Maritime Systems at Stevens Institute of Technology. He is a former Chief Scientist of the National Ocean Service at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Director of the Coast Survey Development Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. in physical oceanography from Johns Hopkins University, a Masters in physical oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a BS/BA in physics/biology from Brown University.

Stay a couple extra days for the fifth annual meeting and exhibition Mid-Atlantic Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (MACOORA) meeting on October 28 and 29, 2010., “From Observation to Forecast: Tools for Understanding the Changing World,” following the MABPOM meeting. The meeting will focus on products, outcomes and finding solutions to critical issues using observations.

Registration fees are waived, but you must register to attend. See the MACOORA web site for more information and to register: http://www.macoora.org/annualmeeting.html
