Colonial Heritage to Host First Annual Pickleball Tournament This Weekend

Colonial Heritage in Williamsburg Are Hosting Their First Annual Pickleball Tournament This Weekend.

Williamsburg, VA, October 14, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Residents of Lennar’s active adult community, Colonial Heritage in Williamsburg are hosting their First Annual Pickleball Tournament this weekend. The event, sponsored by Lennar, will take place at the Colonial Heritage Clubhouse, 7015 Statesman in Williamsburg, with a qualifying round on Saturday, October 16 from 8 a.m. to 3 pm. and final play-offs on October 17 from 8:30 am. to 3 pm.

“We are really looking forward to our First Annual Pickleball Tournament,” said Page Sutton, Colonial Heritage resident and tournament organizer. “Pickleball is a great sport and is really starting to catch on all across the country. Colonial Heritage has become an epicenter for those interested in playing pickleball in Williamsburg, so it’s only fitting that we host a tournament.”

A cross between ping-pong, badminton, racquetball and tennis, pickleball is simple for beginners to learn but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

The sport is typically played indoors or outdoors on a smaller, tennis-like court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. Players use a perforated plastic baseball, similar to a wiffle ball and wood or composite paddles. The object of the game is to score points by successfully hitting the ball across the net without it being successfully returned by the opponent(s).

Colonial Heritage initiated their pickleball club just over two years ago and with Sutton’s help, the group has grown from a small handful of participants to well over 50.

“It is funny to think that just a couple of years ago, few people knew what pickleball was; now more seniors are playing pickleball than almost anything else,” Sutton said.

The sport has gained in popularity because it offers a much lower impact athletic option to tennis. Because of the smaller court and slower pace of the game there is less pounding and stress on body joints. Pickleball mostly relies on concentration and friendly competition rather than speed and power.
