In this podcast, van der Meulen, a Human Resources Director for the Latin American region of a global medical device company, discusses her path to a human resources career. Van der Meulen graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a dual major in International Studies and German, intending to go into international business. She took her first job as a legal assistant, where she became fascinated with the results an organization can have through its people. From there, she went to Columbia University and earned her Master’s Degree in Organizational Psychology. Currently, with fifteen years experience in the human resources field, Sabine has come full circle, as she now is working in a position that takes her across borders.

During the podcast, van der Meulen discusses a “typical” day for her, which may include involvement in long-term strategic focus for the company, working in the field or “firefighting” in the moment. Listen as van der Meulen shares some “war stories,” one of which involves a voicemail message that never disconnected. Van der Meulen also provides excellent tips and recommendations for those listeners considering a career in human resources.

“A business cannot operate without a strong human resources department,” states Michael Rivera, co-founder of Top-Tier Tutoring and host of this Ear on Careers episode.
