Denmark’s Roskilde Libraries Chooses Axiell’s Calm for Archival Management to Bring Cultural Heritage Online

Cultural heritage from Denmark's Zealand region such as photographs will soon be online with Axiell's Calm system

Nottingham, United Kingdom, November 28, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Denmark’s Roskilde Libraries, one of the country’s seven biggest libraries, has purchased Axiell’s Calm system to organise and present its cultural heritage. Roskilde Libraries is a public library for the 80,000-strong municipality of Roskilde and a central library for the 820,000 inhabitants in the region of Zealand. The Local History Library and Archive is part of the library and owns a large collection of photographs, some of which have already been digitised.

The first items to be presented in the Calm Archives collection management system will be local history images of interest to local residents and tourists, with other material such as archives, audio and film to be added in the future. The information will be made available online via CalmView, the public access module for Calm. A new library management system, Axiell’s DDELibra is also being adopted, and web-based library portal Axiell Arena will be introduced, which will allow users to have one point of access and search to cultural heritage and library items.

Roskilde’s central library consultant, Hans Michelsen, says, “We chose Calm to bring our cultural artefacts to a wider audience and for its interoperability with our new library management system. We are also involved in EuropeanaLocal.eu, a project leading to the European cultural database www.europeana.eu, where material from 27 countries and a multitude of databases can be searched online in one search. For this we needed an application which was ready for OAI-PMH(i) to present our digitised material. Calm is OAI compatible so that Europeana can easily harvest data from Calm for its central database, Europeana users can view the record on Europeana and can also choose to link back to our database for additional information.”

Axiell’s Calm system is used by over 350 customers across the UK including Hampshire Record Office, Parliamentary Archives, The Tate Library and Archive, and Wellcome Library.
