Two A*STAR I²R Scientists Conferred Prestigious IEEE Fellow Status

Singapore, Singapore, December 17, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Dr. Susanto Rahardja and Dr Liang Ying Chang of A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) have been recognized for their efforts in research by the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to the status of `IEEE Fellow,’ the highest honor to be bestowed by IEEE.

The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one- percent of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement. 321 individuals have been elevated to IEEE Fellow for 2011.

Dr. Susanto Rahardja, who is Head of the Signal Department cum Director (Research) at I2R, is being recognized for contributions to leadership in digital audio and signal processing while Dr. Liang, who is a Senior Scientist in the Modulation and Coding Department, recognized for contributions to cognitive radio communications. The promotions take effect from 2011. Additional information on Dr. Susanto and Dr. Liang and their scientific contributions is available in Annex A and B respectively.

Prof Lye Kin Mun, Executive Director, Institute for Infocomm Research (I²R), said, "We are very proud that our researchers have been selected to receive such a rare and high honor by their peers. Prior to these latest additions, there were 20 IEEE fellows based in Singapore. In the Asia region, only 19.4% of nominees are elevated to IEEE Fellow status as of 2010. There are more than 395,000 IEEE members in over 160 countries around the world.
