MRSA Infected Mesh Successfully Treated with Triticum's L-Mesitran Honey Ointment

Maastricht, Netherlands, January 12, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The overall reported percentage of mesh infections is 1.3%. Infections after incisional ventral hernia repair depend on many factors. Salvaging an infected mesh should be the priority, because serious complications are reported following mesh removal.

Dr Chatzoulis et al. reports a case report and literature review on the salvage of an MRSA-infected titanium mesh in a large incisional ventral hernia. The article is published in The World Journal of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery (‘Hernia’).

In this case report, a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-infected titanium mesh was salvaged by a novel technique, not requiring removal. The combination of vacuum assisted closure(VAC therapy) of the wound and medical honey (L-Mesitran) proved to be successful in leaving the mesh in situ.

The article also reviews the literature regarding the possible pathogenetic mechanisms and treatmentoptions. An abstract of this article can be found via http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21191626.
