Joe Landy Takes Helm as Corporate Chair for 10th Annual Palm Beach Walk Now for Autism Speaks

Boca Raton, FL, January 14, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Joe Landy of Lesser, Lesser, Landy & Smith, PLLC has been appointed Corporate Chair of the 10th Annual Palm Beach Walk Now For Autism Speaks, with LLL&S signing on as a Corporate Visionary Sponsor. Held to combat autism, the nation’s fastest-growing developmental disorder that is now diagnosed in more than one in every 110 American children, the 2011 Walk is scheduled for Sunday, March 6th in Downtown West Palm Beach. Just prior to the start of the Walk, Autism Speaks will host its first competitive 5K Run to introduce Autism Speaks to and raise awareness about autism within the running community in South Florida.

Last year, LLL&S ranked as the highest fundraising team when it stepped off with more than 5,000 corporate and community participants -- including individuals with autism, their families and friends -- in the 2010 Palm Beach Walk Now for Autism Speaks that raised $324,000 to fund critical scientific research, advocacy efforts and family services in South Florida. Active in the community, LLL&S -- the third oldest law firm in Palm Beach County -- has donated significant time and financial support to numerous charities, including several that provide vital programs, advocacy, and research for children with special needs.

“It is important that the corporate community as well as individual walkers come out to support Autism Speaks and its efforts in treating, and hopefully one day eradicating autism, a disorder the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called a national public health crisis for which cause and cure remain unknown,” said 2011 Walk Now Corporate Chair and LLL&S Partner Joe Landy.

“It is my privilege to once again lead the corporate initiative for this event along with the strong support, commitment, and participation of Lesser, Lesser, Landy & Smith as the Autism Speaks and its work significantly impact the lives of so many South Florida children and their families.”

Affecting four times as many boys as girls, the prevalence of autism increased 57 percent from 2002 to 2006. Autism Speaks is the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization that has committed more than $131 million to research and developing innovative new resources for families through 2014. The organization is dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. In addition to funding research, Autism Speaks also supports the Autism Treatment Network, Autism Genetic Resource Exchange and several other scientific and clinical programs and has played a critical role in securing federal legislation to advance the government’s response to autism, and successfully advocated for insurance reform to cover behavioral treatments.

Established in 2000, the Walk Now for Autism Speaks events take place all over the country in more than 80 cities, and are the signature fundraising events for Autism Speaks that have raised tens of millions of dollars for the research of Autism, a complex neurobiological disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by behavioral challenges. For the fifth straight year, Toys"R"Us® and Babies"R"Us® serve as the North American sponsors of Walk Now for Autism Speaks.
