Green Government Podcast Features American University Professor Discussing Environmental Sustainability and EO 13514

Interview discusses government’s role in green procurement, purchasing and Executive Order 13514.

Alexandria, VA, January 18, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The Center for Environmental Innovation and Leadership (CEIL) Green Government Podcast this week features Daniel Fiorino, Director of the Center for Environmental Policy (CEP) at American University. In the podcast, Fiorino discusses environmental sustainability and the role of the government in promoting green procurement and policies through Executive Order 13514.

Created in March 2010, CEP‘s mission is to improve environmental governance in the United States. As Fiorino explains, environmental sustainability is a collective action problem, which requires a third party – the government – to get involved and implement rules, such as Executive Order 13514.

“The idea of Executive Order 13514 is to make agencies exemplars of what it is be a sustainable organization by adopting sustainable policies,” says Fiorino. The federal government can foster a sustainable future through both purchasing and policy.

“Both are important,” says Fiorino. “Procurement has a more direct effect, and it’s certainly a lever worth using. But, we can’t underestimate the impact of government policy on moving American society in the direction of sustainability.” Fiorino adds that the government can effectively contribute to sustainability by providing useful lessons on how to deal with environmental issues.

According to Fiorino, EO 13514 is unique in connecting sustainability to economic goals, making the case that good environmental practices can have a positive economic effect. That’s an important step forward in the nation’s environmental dialogue, Fiorino says.

“I’m a big believer in demonstrating the value of change. We shouldn’t rely on slogans or abstractions,” he says. “Come up with concrete evidence and concrete examples and the kinds of tools that everyone can use.”
