Ridgefield, CT, February 11, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Michael Thaman, CEO of Owens Corning, a Fortune 500™ listed company for more than 56 years with 16,000 employees, talks with host Robert Reiss on the CEO Show about ways to increase energy efficiency in homes and industry, and suggests some appropriate policy priorities for progress. Thaman tells how Owens Corning products help consume less energy by improving insulation and enabling better energy efficiency by using fiberglass reinforced products that are often lighter in weight than non-reinforced materials.

Reiss and Thaman discuss the extent to which energy efficiency can be increased and Thaman explains that with today’s products and technologies it is possible to construct new commercial buildings that are 40 percent more energy efficient than current building codes require. While future improvements in energy efficiency do not have to happen overnight, Thaman suggests that we need to have a strong [ energy ] policy that will “hold our buildings to a higher standard of energy efficiency , if we are going to solve the energy challenges … we face.”

Thaman also tells Reiss that through increasing energy efficiency by consumers many of the problems associated with power generating utilities will be reduced as less energy is consumed. Reducing energy consumption “starts with a well insulated, well sealed shell of your home, next the efficiency of its HVAC ( heating and cooling ) systems, and then the consumer electronic devices and lighting.” “And the challenge”, Thaman states, “is how do you put a policy in place that encourages efficiency …?” Part of the answer lies in changing the regulatory environment that now drives utilities to produce more power at lower cost to one that encourages reduced energy consumption by end users.

Later in the interview, Thaman goes on to say that “All roads point to a single direction” --- to find a way to consume less energy. Paraphrasing his conclusion, he remarks, “In consuming less energy we reduce our dependence on imported oil, improve our balance of payments, and decrease our emissions to the atmosphere.”
