Hollenbeck Palms Retirement Community Becomes Comedy Central for Older Adults
Hollenbeck Palms Retirement Community introduces two unique comedy programs for older adults.
Los Angeles, CA, April 03, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Hollenbeck Palms Retirement Community introduces two unique comedy programs available for participation by it’s approximately 135 older adult residents, announced Dennis Hiebert, Hollenbeck Palms Activities Coordinator.
“In our 121st year of providing older adults with a wonderful lifestyle and an array of activities, we are excited to offer two comedy activities programs that encourage personal expression, tremendous fun, and a lot of laughs for all of our residents,” notes Dennis.
The programs, Stand-Up-Comedy with Susanna Spies and The Improv Workshop with Suzanne Kent provide workshops, sessions and performances via the self expression and talents of Hollenbeck Palms’ residents. Susanna Spies, founder of Comedy Playground at the Los Angeles Improv, has reworked her “kids” program for older adults using many similar techniques. Says Susanna, “the process involves activities and exercises that not only dissect the structure and delivery of jokes but also encourage individuals’ points of view. I’m really not teaching the residents how to be funny, because they do that themselves. I’m encouraging them to share who they are through comedy.”
Suzanne Kent’s approach to Improv is founded in the tradition of the Groundlings where she was one of the original members. She also created the Sunday Company and was its Founding Director. She is best known for her memorable appearances on Taxi as Angela Matusa and Mrs. Rene, the neighbor on Pee Wee’s Playhouse. Other credits include Curb Your Enthusiasm, St. Elsewhere, Seventh Heaven and Brotherly Love among others.
