Children of New York Honor Their Mentors for National Volunteer Appreciation Week

Across New York State Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies gathered letters from youth who wanted to show appreciation and gratitude to their volunteer mentors during National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 10-16th.

Kingston, NY, April 10, 2011 --(PR.com)-- In New York City Little Brother LC and Big Brother John have been matched in the program through Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City since 6/24/2009. “When I first met John I didn’t know what to think. He was always asking me questions and I didn’t really know what to say. We’ve been friends for a long time now and now when we talk I know what to say and that John cares about me. John is always calling and asking about school… He finds skateboarding events and we went snowboarding last year.” – Little Brother LC age 14

Also in New York City, Little Brother Malik and Big Brother Anthony have been matched in the program since 9/20/2007. “My Big Brother Anthony is an outstanding mentor and brother. When I first met Anthony I was excited because I never really had a positive male role model in my life. Anthony has helped me gain self-confidence because when I was younger I never really had much of that… He helps me with homework projects that are challenging or uninteresting by making them fun and interesting for me. Anthony fools around and jokes with me alot of the time and I can appreciate that because he is a really funny character. We play online games together and he always makes sure I’m taken cared of… Anthony is the best big brother I could have ever asked for. He always makes time for me and doesn’t let anything interfere in us sharing time, even if only a couple of hours. I never feel forgotten.” – Malik age 13

Big Brother Byron and Little Brother Steven have been matched in the program through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dutchess County since 11/18/2010. “My Big Brother is really special because he likes a lot of the same things I do. When I ask Byron to do something with me, he always makes sure to ask my mom if it’s okay first. My favorite moment with Byron was when we went hiking. We went for a hike in Beacon and then had a picnic on top of a mountain!”- Steven age 10

In Long Island Little Brother Omari wrote a letter to his Big Brother Chris. “We met a couple of months ago, and since then it’s been the best time. Chris you have made me shine every weekend since we met. We have experienced a lot together from monster trucks, to boxing matches, and even just relaxing at the park and shooting hoops… You make me shine because of your jokes, and the fact that you can take part of day to come see me. I look up to you. You are the big brother I never had. I thank you for making me shine and all you have done! – Sincerely, your little brother Omari

New York’s Children of Promise is a very unique mentoring program. All the children involved in the program either have been impacted by incarceration within their families, live in a high crime neighborhood, or have a parent currently incarcerated within a state or federal prison facility. Mentors in this program are educated on best mentoring practices, coping styles and child safety. The matches meet at least 4-6 hours per month and take part in a range of activities.
