Blue Skies Recycling Collected Food Waste for Composting at St. Louis Earth Day Celebration

Blue Skies Recycling recently participated in the St. Louis Earth Day Celebration where they educated the public about organics recycling services and collected food waste for composting.

Saint Louis, MO, May 12, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The 22nd annual St. Louis Earth Day featured thousands of St. Louisans gathered in Forest Park to learn about sustainable living, reducing fuel usage and, of course, recycling. Blue Skies Recycling was on hand to collect food waste for composting and provide information about its organics recycling services.

“We collected nearly 1000 pounds of compost in just those few hours,” says Harry Cohen, Blue Skies Recycling President and Founder. “Imagine how much organic material and food waste we could collect per day around the city once we really get Blue Skies’ name out there.”

St. Louis Earth Day has grown into a massive attraction that draws more than 25,000 attendees annually. Attendees learned that not only can the traditional recyclable materials such as glass, plastic bottles and paper be dumped in green bins, but that offbeat items one would never expect to be recycled, such as appliances, sinks, buttons, VCRs, Christmas lights and TVs, can be broken down and used again too.

After attendees dropped off their old junk to be recycled, they enjoyed live music and refreshments in the vast greenery of Forest Park. When they were done eating their food and had scraps to throw away, the 25,000+ Earth Day enthusiasts were able to drop their food waste in the 20 Blue Skies yellow bins placed throughout the park. Bins were then picked up by Blue Skies and hauled to a licensed compost facility.

“St. Louis Earth Day has turned into such a huge event,” Harry says. “I was just glad to be a part of it and to help divert a bunch of food waste.”
