Blue Skies Recycling Teams Up with Hodak’s Restaurant and Bar for Composting

Blue Skies Recycling is now working with Hodak's Restaurant and Bar in St. Louis, Missouri. Blue Skies will help to decrease the waste produced by the restaurant by diverting a large amount of their organic waste from landfills to a greener composting service.

Saint Louis, MO, June 20, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Blue Skies Recycling has partnered with Hodak’s Restaurant & Bar to make sure that none of Hodak’s golden fried chicken ever sees a landfill again. Hodak’s decided to jump on board with Blue Skies’ food composting program to divert a large chunk of its landfill waste, which had risen to 25 tons per month.

“Blue Skies Recycling has been a dream come true. I just wish I had signed up for a similar program years ago,” says Charlene Hegel, owner of Hodak’s since 1988, who has seen about three-quarters of her landfill waste, roughly 18.9 tons, diverted since pairing with Blue Skies three months ago.

Located on Gravois Road, Hodak’s has been a St. Louis institution since it opened in 1962. As the Riverfront Times says, there are three certain things on this earth: death, taxes and Hodak’s winning RFT’s Favorite Fried Chicken Award every year. Charlene knows that a long-term successful restaurant must constantly tinker with its menu to stay fresh and always find new ways to stay relevant. In other words, restaurants often have to change with the times to retain regulars and attract new customers. As Charlene says, what better way to get a restaurant’s name out there than to join a recycling program that makes a positive difference?

“Not only does our partnership with Blue Skies raise our employees’ morale, conserve resources and make a positive impression on the community, it’s also cost-effective. What more could I want?” Charlene says.

By composting its food waste, Hodak’s is helping the environment by suppressing plant diseases, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers, promoting higher yields of agricultural crops and, of course, reducing the amount of waste that goes into the already overcrowded landfills.

Charlene says that she’s thrilled with Blue Skies’ dedicated staff. After just two months, Charlene was so satisfied with the composting program that she enlisted Blue Skies to take care of all of her single-stream recycling needs too, which includes (but is not limited to) glass, cardboard, paper, aluminum and most plastic materials. This gives Hodak’s the added convenience of dealing with a single vendor and having a single collection point within their restaurant for pickup.

“Blue Skies is so convenient. I don’t understand why any restaurant or business in St. Louis wouldn’t want to partner with them,” Charlene says.
