Formic Media Makes Donation to Help Local Charities

Portland, OR, June 23, 2011 --( Formic Media, Inc. announced that it would be making a $500 donation to Dining to Give, a local company helping enable small acts of philanthropy through bi-monthly dinners held at the Oregon Culinary Institute.

Formic Media has always had a commitment to the local community it serves. When founding the company, President Kent Lewis instituted a Charity of Choice program, where Formic would take on one pro-bono charity client each year. That program recently expanded to include a quarterly cash donation, to further impact the effectiveness of Portland-area non-profit organizations.

“Formic Media, Inc. has already donated its time and resources to its 2011 Charity of Choice, Oregon Humane Society; however, the team felt we could do more, which is what spurred the additional donation to Dining to Give,” stated Kent Lewis, President of Formic Media. “Since we focus on small business marketing, it makes sense for us to ensure we are helping small businesses succeed, one way or another.”

Dining to Give was created in 2010 by Jasmine Avgerakis, then a graduate student at Portland State University. Avgerakis was working full-time and going to school part-time when she came up with the idea. Avgerakis’ thought was to enlist groups of friends to make small donations, versus asking a few people to make large, sizable donations. This format is simple and makes it easier for people to make contributions. “I wanted to do something impactful with my limited resources so I combined my experience in event management, the joy of sharing a meal with good people and great food in an affordable way,” Avgerakis explained. Her goal is to create a platform that can be utilized by communities across the country to promote philanthropy in a fun and satisfying way.

After each dinner, the proceeds are shared with one charity. Deciding on a charity to give the proceeds to was solved by holding a raffle at each dinner. The winner chooses their charity of choice to be the beneficiary of a future dinner. Dining to Give charges $35 for a 4-course meal and hands over 40% of the dinner proceeds, and 100% of the raffle proceeds to the evening’s featured charity.
