Philadelphia, PA, July 07, 2011 --(PR.com)-- NASA Twitter Followers Will Tweet History as Shuttle Program Nears Retirement

NASA will bring together 150 Twitter followers to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a two-day Tweetup, July 8 - 9, 2011, for the final launch of Atlantis before the space shuttle program is retired. Philadelphia resident Shareef Jackson has been selected as one of 150 @NASA Twitter followers to attend and Tweet the event. Atlantis is targeted to launch on July 8 at around 11:40 a.m. EDT on mission STS-135 to the International Space Station.

As a NASA Tweetup attendee, Jackson and the other 149 Twitterers will interact with NASA shuttle technicians, engineers, astronauts, managers and NASA’s social media team as well as tour the Kennedy Space Center and view the shuttle launch from the media area. Attendees were selected through a lottery system in which more than 5,000 @NASA Twitter followers applied.

“I've been interested in astronomy since I was a child,” Jackson said. “One of mankind's greatest triumphs is being able to launch humans in space, and I'm honored to be a witness to history. In addition, it is refreshing to see organizations such as NASA reach out to its supporters via technology such as Twitter. I'm looking forward to networking with other supporters of NASA."

Jackson lives in West Philadelphia with his wife and works at Shire Pharmaceuticals in Wayne, PA as a senior database analyst. Follow his Tweets at twitter.com/shareefjackson and visit his website at shareefjackson.com.

NASA Tweetup attendees are traveling from across the U.S. and the globe to attend this historic event. A list of registered Twitter attendees can be found on the NASA Tweetup Twitter account: http://twitter.com/NASATweetup/sts-135-launch/members
