Beautyjar.com and Raising a Reader Promote Future Scholars

Washington, DC, March 24, 2007 --(PR.com)-- With a passion for literacy and education, online retailer Beautyjar.com has partnered with San Francisco based non-profit child literacy program Raising a Reader, to increase literacy in low income communities. The online retailer will contribute a percentage of all sales for the month of April to help promote future scholars.

Raising A Reader is an early-literacy program aimed at child-care centers and preschools in low-income neighborhoods and in communities where parents have limited literacy skills or where English is a second language.

“Literacy-rich environments can play a major role in strengthening families and breaking the cycle of poverty. They are also essential for ensuring healthy brain development,” said Janell Bolte, director of the San Francisco County Raising A Reader program. She points out that one in three children in the U.S. enters kindergarten without basic pre-reading abilities and, consequently, never develops strong reading skills -- a key factor in determining high-school graduation and lifelong success.

Introduced in San Francisco three and a half years ago, Raising A Reader provides infants, toddlers and preschoolers with bright red book bags filled with high-quality children's books, featuring appealing artwork, age-appropriate language, and multicultural themes.

In addition to children’s books, Raising A Reader bags contain instructions for parents in English, Chinese and Spanish, offering best practices for sharing books with their young children so they become lifelong readers. Book bags are exchanged weekly, so students are exposed to over 100 children's books over the course of the school year.

“All of the staff at Beautyjar.com are happy to work with Raising a Reader for this great cause,” says Nana osei, Beautyjar.com founder and literacy and education advocate.
