FieldTurf Artificial Turf Fields Proven to Provide the Most Effective Management of Stormwater

Maryland study reports that FieldTurf has better stormwater infiltration than natural grass in addition to better permeability/infiltration characteristics than an AstroTurf product.

Montreal, Canada, July 16, 2011 --(PR.com)-- A study was recently completed in June 2011 by Maryland-based firms AKRF, Inc. and D. S. Thaler and Associates, LLC with the goal of analyzing the stormwater management effectiveness of FieldTurf compared to natural grass and an AstroTurf product. The results add to an already large body of research proving the worth of FieldTurf’s patented product design characteristics that allow the world leader in artificial turf to boast the highest permeability rates and the best infiltration characteristics for stormwater management.

The report looked at product laboratory data along with measured results from a FieldTurf field at Coatesville High School in Pennsylvania. The conclusion was that the use of products such as FieldTurf in Environmental Site Design (ESD) to achieve stormwater targets are desirable to counties in Maryland who are tasked with meeting very strict stormwater management requirements.

The study report entitled ‘Effectiveness of FieldTurf Artificial Turf for Management of Stormwater’ can be downloaded in its entirety on the FieldTurf website.

The following statements are the highlighted conclusions from the June 2011 report

· Given its high infiltration rate, FieldTurf applications offer the potential to infiltrate stormwater to a greater extent than from natural turf fields of certain soil characteristics.

· FieldTurf had much higher permeability rates than an AstroTurf product using the same testing procedures. Therefore, if both products used the same subsurface treatment, it is reasonable to assume that FieldTurf would exhibit substantially better infiltration characteristics for stormwater management purposes.

· FieldTurf allows for a decrease in the peak stormwater flow to the waterway, which can have positive effects, such as a reduction in erosion.

· FieldTurf does not require the traditional lawn supplements (fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides) or use of hydrocarbon emitting mowers that are necessary to maintain healthy natural turf.

· The use of FieldTurf surfaces is consistent with State of Maryland and USEPA mandated initiatives to substantially reduce nitrogen, phosphorus and suspended sediment loads to Chesapeake Bay over the next decade.

The report goes on to state how FieldTurf is consistent with sustainability initiatives being implemented both in Maryland and on the national level when it comes to improving water quality.
