South Florida Students Departing Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport for Mission Work in Ghana, Africa

On July 19, 2011 seven students from Broward and Dade Counties will be departing from the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International airport (FLL) headed to Ghana, Africa to help improve the lives of the people in the rural village of Agogo (Ft. Lauderdale’s Sister City). Media opportunity is at 3 p.m.

Ft. Lauderdale, FL, July 18, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The students range in age from 14-20 years old and had to complete an innovative, 12-week training program in social entrepreneurship through the HONEY Project Academy in order to be eligible for the trip.

The HONEY Project which stands for Helping Our Nations Empowering Youth was launched in 2006 to provide positive opportunities for young people ages 15-24; while addressing the issues of poverty relief, sustainable development and youth empowerment. Its mission is to inspire, equip and empower young people to impact the world through social enterprise.

The students departing from FLL were invited to participate in the HONEY Project xChange and its goal towards promoting and encouraging trade and investment opportunities for young people between developed and emerging nations. Upon their arrival in Ghana, the students will perform a comprehensive community assessment to determine the needs of the village. Empowerment workshops with local youth utilizing the internet will be conducted and they will also help build bee hives with the subsistent farmers and the Agogo Cooperative. In addition, they will also address the issue of de-forestation by planting trees with partner organization One Village Planet.

After their visit and return home, each student will submit a project proposal that identifies the next sustainable project that will be implemented in the village to provide continued support to the Agogo Cooperative. “HONEY Project xChange missions allow students to conduct on the ground case studies in social entrepreneurship and provides them with a life-changing experience. Each student will pursue practical and hands on experience in global business development and sustainability,” explained Founder and CEO Nathan Burrell.
