New Playground Encourages Learning Through Play at Lickhill Primary School

Birmingham, United Kingdom, July 28, 2011 --(PR.com)-- The new playground installation at Lickhill Primary School was completed on January 31st 2011. Since then, the children have been putting it through its paces as a space to play, learn and explore.

The play equipment was fitted by Playsmart UK. They understand that children interpret spaces quite differently to adults. Anything and everything can be used and plays a role in the development of the senses, physical coordination, communication, cognitive abilities and cooperation.

Storytelling features strongly in the new playground. A maze-like, wooden construction provides class seating, paired with a storyteller’s chair to support literacy and comprehension through reading and listening.

For free play, or to incorporate into lessons or stories, the playground now has several play sculptures. Encouraging awareness of the natural world, there are creatures from frogs to butterflies as well as a square, tiered stage that can be used for performances, or learning about shapes. A concave mirror can help children with sensory and visual understanding, as well as being a base for early science lessons about reflection.

Lickhilll Primary School worked closely with Playsmart UK to install the ideal play environment and this first summer term with the new playground equipment sure to be a memorable one for staff and pupils alike. Special thanks go to the PTA committee for their funding contributions.
