Insulgard* Security Products’ New FEMA-Compliant Full Lite Architectural Doors Combine Extreme Weather Protection with Improved Ambiance

Insulgard* Security Products – the industry leader in architectural security products – today announced new full lite architectural aluminum security doors that help protect emergency workers and the public from life-threatening hurricanes and tornadoes.

Pittsfield, MA, August 20, 2011 --(PR.com)-- This next-generation protection system combines Insulgard’s TH350 door and TH600 framing, TOR-GARD glazing material and Lexan* polycarbonate (PC) sheet from SABIC’s Innovative Plastics strategic business unit. The full lite architectural aluminum door meets Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and ICC-500 requirements for impact and pressure for tornado and hurricane shelters. Further, because it is transparent, the doors allows light to come in for improved ambiance. Applications include interior and exterior doors for emergency shelters; utility control facilities; 911 call centers; and critical government infrastructure.

“To meet increasing customers demand for security doors that can combine exceptional protection with much enhanced ambiance – versus competitive products such as plywood and steel – we’ve developed the first transparent doors that meet stringent industry requirements,” said Fred Gebauer, a business development manager at SABIC. “Until now, the only products available were windowless systems, which can create a claustrophobic experience, but our new doors admit natural light to provide a more pleasant and less-confining environment for emergency workers and the public. They also give architects a wide range of desirable new options for designing aesthetically pleasing facilities to be used as hurricane or tornado shelters.”

Industry Tested and Approved

Independent testing by Architectural Testing, Inc., of York, Penn., has demonstrated that Insulgard transparent doors can withstand the force of a 15-lb. 2x4 wooden board shot from an air cannon at 100 mph to simulate projectiles hurled during a hurricane or tornado. The evaluation included simulated winds of up to 225 mph (hurricane) and 250 mph (tornado). The doors are available in single and double configurations up to 7 ft. by 8 ft., with or without a center mullion.

The Insulgard full lite architectural aluminum door meets FEMA 361-2008 requirements for missile impact resistance, ICC-500, Section 804; pressure in accordance with ICC-500, Section 805; and cyclic pressures in accordance with ASTM E1996 requirements for tornado and hurricane shelters.

SABIC’s Insulgard Security Products combine the material innovation of Lexan sheet and the technical expertise of the experienced Insulgard team. Together, they bring rugged and effective materials with exceptional safety features to the marketplace.
