Bayer MaterialScience LLC Scientist Discussed Using Waterborne Polyurethane Dispersion Chemistry to Coat Glass Containers

Pittsburgh, PA, September 14, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Industrial coatings (coatings applied at the time of manufacture) constitute a sizable market: in 2008, 344 million gallons of industrial coatings were sold to customer industries at a value of $5.6 billion.[1]

Waterborne polyurethane dispersion (PUD) chemistry offers a unique value proposition for a number of segments within the industrial coatings market, including glass containers.

Dr. Raymond Stewart, senior R&D scientist, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, presented “Glass Coatings Technologies (Industrial Coatings Example),” at the Pittsburgh Society for Coatings Technology’s September meeting. The meeting took place Sept. 12, 2011.

Dr. Stewart discussed new coatings advances, with attention to polymer design and paint formulation for one component (1K) polyurethane coatings for the industrial coatings market, with an emphasis on glass containers. He also highlighted the benefits of using waterborne PUD chemistry, including improved design freedom, the ability to achieve a frost effect without acid etching, low VOCs (volatile organic compounds), improved durability and reduced glass wall thickness. In addition, he described the superior performance of 1K polyurethane coatings for various glass container market segments, including returnable bottles, decorative tableware, perfume bottles, decorative flatglass and non-returnable bottles.

“Today’s formulator is seeking new tools to develop coatings to meet customer needs,” explained Dr. Stewart. “Waterborne PUD chemistry is considered a benchmark for coatings performance and, as such, offers an excellent combination of properties for the demanding industrial coatings market.”
