Assisted Living Community for Low-Income Seniors Opens in Northwest Las Vegas

Las Vegas, NV, October 09, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Nevada H.A.N.D., Inc. will celebrate the grand opening of Silver Sky at Deer Springs (Deer Springs) on Thursday, October 27. The facility was developed in conjunction with government and city entities including the State of Nevada Housing Division’s ARRA stimulus funds through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Exchange Program (TCEP), City of Las Vegas, City of North Las Vegas, Clark County and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide low-income seniors with assisted living opportunities. Nevada HAND is a non-profit organization and a leader in developing affordable housing in Southern Nevada.

Deer Springs is an assisted living facility with 90 one- and two-bedroom standard and handicap-accessible apartments. It is located adjacent to Decatur Pines, a 75-unit independent senior living facility also developed by Nevada HAND. Deer Springs’ main building is approximately 83,000 square feet and includes amenities designed specifically for its residents.

Among the scheduled guests at the October 27 grand opening are Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman, Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Ross, Nevada Housing Division Chief of Federal Programs Dr. Hilary Lopez, Nevada HAND president Michael Mullin and Deer Springs residents.

“Deer Springs is a unique model that has proven effective in providing low-income seniors with affordable housing in a positive daily environment,” said Mullin. “Residents receive three meals a day in our dining facility, snacks throughout the day in our popular gelato café, recreational and wellness programs, transportation when needed, a movie theatre, an activity center with computer access, a Country Store, a beauty salon and a library among other amenities. We have incorporated wellness, social and dining elements that are best suited to their lifestyles with the goal of providing all the things they need within the comforts of their own homes.”

Apartments at Deer Springs are specially designed for those with special needs and include modern kitchens with microwaves and refrigerators, cable television, individual temperature controls, private bathrooms with walk-in or roll-in showers and individual state-of-the-art fire and smoke detection systems. “For those in wheelchairs, we also have specially designed faucets, lower light switches and showers equipped with emergency buttons in case assistance is needed,” said Mullin.

Deer Springs employs a full staff of professionals to assist with residents’ personal care needs, housekeeping and laundry services, transportation and recreation programs. “We even have an exam room for doctors who are able to make ‘house calls’ and visit our residents in their homes,” said Mullin.

About 30 residents currently live at Silver Sky at Deer Springs, with applications being accepted to fill the available apartments. Monthly payments are all-inclusive and start at $2,217 per month. Prospective residents must meet income and age guidelines and complete a medical packet with their physicians to qualify.

“Nevada HAND has been working in Southern Nevada for nearly 20 years to create affordable living options in the community,” said Mullin. The organization developed Nevada’s first affordable assisted living facility, Silver Sky Assisted Living Residence, in Las Vegas using free land donated by the City of Las Vegas. It also developed Nevada’s first federally discounted land sale under The Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act of 1998, Harmon Pines Senior Apartments. And Nevada HAND developed the first permanent affordable housing for chronically homeless individuals using HUD’s Supporting Housing Program’s Continuum of Care funds, for Horizon Crest Family Apartments in Las Vegas. The company currently owns and/or operates more than 3,100 housing units in 32 affordable living communities. These projects became a reality through partnerships with the Nevada Housing Division’s Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program.
