Chinese Want More Holidays, But Fail to Use Them

Only 14 percent of professionals in China took all their holiday allowance in 2010, according to research by recruitment consultancy Robert Walters, while training company, ClarkMorgan Corporate Training, found that increasing holiday allowance was high up, at 21 percent, for incentives demanded by Chinese employees, providing a complicated picture of how to motivate Chinese staff.

Shanghai, China, October 12, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Only 14 percent of professionals in China took all their holiday allowance in 2010, according to research by recruitment consultancy Robert Walters. In the report released by Robert Walters titled "Working Professionals in China take the least number of holidays," Carter Yang, Managing Director at Robert Walters said that this work/life imbalance could be caused by Chinese professionals' thriftiness as well as the increased demand by employers which resulted in the taking of less leave.

The research is in sharp contrast to a recent incentives and rewards survey conducted by ClarkMorgan Corporate Training, which found that 21 percent of professionals in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen would like to have more holidays, as part of their incentive program.

"Ironically we have Chinese demanding more holidays to maintain motivated, while at the same time the vast majority are not using their existing holiday allowance," said Brice Cantrell, Managing Editor for Network HR magazine, the research and publishing arm of ClarkMorgan Corporate Training.

This phenomenon comes at the same time as MRI Worldwide research has found that Chinese consider a balanced work/life balance critical to their engagement. “HR in China is in a serious quandary over what benefits to offer employees to increase engagement and attract candidates, when employees themselves don’t truly know what they want,” said Cantrell.
