How to Brand an Unconference

BarCamp Rochester will sport a brand new logo and branding donated by GTTS Marketing at this Saturday's event.

Rochester, NY, October 28, 2011 --(PR.com)-- BarCamp Rochester returns to the Rochester Institute of Technology for its fifth year this Saturday, October 29.

The gathering, often called an “unconference” due to its open source nature and encouraged attendee participation, will feature talks on computers, zombies, bacon and more during the single day event, according to Dave Morgan, BarCamp Rochester host and organizer.

“BarCamp is what happens when you get a bunch of passionate geeks into one area, and have them share with each other what they really care about,” said Morgan. “BarCamp Rochester ranges from extremely technical talks about the minutia of the newest technologies, to how to travel the world on the cheap. Attendees always leave BarCamp Rochester knowing something new, and build great relationships with the greater Rochester tech community.”

This year’s BarCamp Rochester will sport a brand new logo, redesigned stickers and T-shirts, a new email campaign layout, several pieces of printed collateral and more, all designed and donated by Going to the Sun Marketing (GTTS), a local full-service marketing firm and BarCamp Rochester corporate sponsor. GTTS Creative Director, David Moffitt, a frequent BarCamp presenter and attendee himself, was eager to lend his company’s marketing and branding talents to the ad hoc gathering.

“It’s not something we sponsor because we expect to see any business out of it,” explained Moffitt. “It’s more wanting to foster a climate of innovation and tech interest in the area. We want to see Rochester become the next Austin or other tech startup-friendly city. I believe that if we’re all succeeding, then we all benefit from it.”

For part of their new branding, GTTS designed a logo which incorporated Rochester’s iconic five petal lilac/water wheel design, while at the same time recognizing the unconference’s original RIT connection. BarCamp Rochester’s organizers praised the work donated by GTTS, calling it “crucial” to the event’s continued growth.

“Their support has been invaluable,” said Morgan. “We have been extremely pleased with all the work that has been done on the new BarCamp Rochester brand. Emails to attendees and sponsors have been beautiful, and there has been a consistent buzz about the new look given to us by GTTS.

“Running BarCamp Rochester is difficult,” Morgan added. “All of our funding is based on donations and sponsorships. On top of that, all of our organizers are volunteers who have their own ‘real-life’ organizations donate as well. For us, to be able to work with GTTS to get a new design out, a beautiful email sent, or a stylish T-shirt made, it helps us make things possible.”

Started in Palo Alto, Calif., in 2005, Barcamp has since spread far beyond its West Coast beginnings with unconferences now being held in major cities around the globe. BarCamp Rochester itself has also grown from an annual event, to a twice a year gathering in both the spring and fall. Organizers say this weekend’s BarCamp will be the most attended in the Rochester event’s history.

BarCamp Rochester runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences building, with free lunch provided and T-shirts for pre-registered attendees (although extras may be available). Wi-Fi is available throughout the event, and the open nature means that attendees who must step out can do so, though the event encourages an immersive, away-from-it-all atmosphere.
