Bayer CropScience Explains Need to Double World’s Agricultural Output by 2050

Crop Science Company Discusses Food Scarcity and Population Growth on World’s Seventh “Billion-Person” Milestone

Raleigh, NC, November 02, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Bayer CropScience (http://www.bayercropscience.com), one of the world’s top innovative crop science companies in the areas of crop protection, non-agricultural pest control, seeds and traits, has announced that it marked the world’s seventh “billion-person” milestone on Oct. 31 with an educational sustainability session. This session was led by Nick Hamon, head of sustainability for Bayer CropScience North America, who discussed the growing issues of food scarcity and population growth. At the event, Hamon explained where the highest population growth is expected and the impact that this growth will have on food and water supplies. He also shared what types of agricultural projects are currently being explored and what additional investment and research will be needed in order to meet the demand. Bayer CropScience is working on projects in areas such as plant health and stress tolerance to help increase agriculture productivity.

Bayer CropScience served various international dishes at the event to call attention to the importance of the challenge to feed seven billion people across the globe and the impact of an additional two or three billion people by the year 2050 on the food supply.

Quotes:
“As our population continues to grow, it is going to become increasingly important that we intensify our research and development in the areas of agricultural science,” said Hamon. “The impact of an additional two or three billion people on our food supply will be remarkable, and we must integrate sustainability thinking and behavior into our culture.”
