Smallpeice Trusts Seeks Budding Young Naval Architects

The Smallpeice Trust's Naval Architecture course will take place at the University of Plymouth from 23rd to 26th July 2012.

Leamington Spa, United Kingdom, December 24, 2011 --(PR.com)-- Independent educational charity The Smallpeice Trust has launched its new 2012 course timetable and is now seeking hundreds of 13 to 17 year old students to sample their taster engineering courses. Any student can apply to attend a wide range of subsidised four-day residential courses which take place at universities nationwide. Subjects include Electronic Engineering, Marine Technology, Mobile Communications, Nuclear Engineering, Railway Engineering and Structural Engineering. These are designed to attract students that have an interest or natural flair in Science, Maths, Design or Technology to consider a career in engineering.

The Naval Architecture course will take place at the University of Plymouth from 23rd to 26th July 2012. During this course, forty aspiring young engineers aged between 16 and 17 years old will enjoy a unique learning experience discovering what’s involved in the creation and maintenance of many different types of ships including aircraft carriers, yachts, submarines and commercial ships.

Sponsored by Babcock, pupils will take part in different activities to enable them to understand the dynamic world of Naval Architecture such as designing and building a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and testing it using a specially constructed underwater obstacle course. This course also includes a unique opportunity to visit Devonport Royal Dockyard, one of the largest marine engineering complexes in Europe where students can gain a real-life perspective of what working within this exciting industry could be like.

Rosemary Prout, Graduate Training Manager – Marine and Technology Division, comments:

“This course provides an exciting opportunity to understand what Naval Architecture is all about and to gain a greater insight into the career opportunities which it offers. Supported by some of Babcock’s Graduate Engineers, the design-and-build project enables them to really put their skills to the test and put some of the principles learned into practice. The feedback that we consistently receive from the students clearly highlights how much they enjoy the course and how much they learn from it; this is also demonstrated by the high standard of designs from the students over the years that we have been running this course.”

Students will also have the opportunity to find out about relevant career opportunities and training routes in Naval Architecture. Social activities include a film evening, a boat trip and a formal dinner at the National Marine Aquarium.

All Smallpeice courses are linked to the National Curriculum and are designed to improve core skills such as team building, financial management, communication and problem solving. By attending one of our courses students will gain experience of university and working life that will accelerate their personal development and their potential for greater academic achievement.

The Naval Architecture course, costs £275 for 4-days full board, all course materials and supervised social activities. Please note that only British nationals will be accepted onto this course due to planned site visits. Course information and application forms can be accessed from www.smallpeicetrust.org.uk or by telephoning 01926 333200. About The Smallpeice Trust:
The Smallpeice Trust is an independent charitable trust which promotes engineering as a career, primarily through the provision of residential courses for young people aged 13 to 18.

The Smallpeice Trust was founded in 1966 by Dr Cosby Smallpeice, a pioneering engineer and inventor of the Smallpeice Lathe. Following the stock market flotation of his company Martonair, Dr Smallpeice invested his energy and part of his personal fortune to set up the Trust to ensure that British industry could continuously benefit from his proven design and engineering philosophies: “Simplicity in design, economy in production.”

The Trust is now governed by an eminent board of non-executive trustees and members from a diverse range of engineering, industry, educational and professional bodies.

In the past academic year, The Smallpeice Trust has reached out to 18,175 young people through 37 different subsidised 4-day residential courses and 1-day in-school STEM Days. The Smallpeice Trust has also trained 674 teachers to enhance their delivery of STEM in the classroom.

A strong interface is maintained with industry, education and professional bodies that help to support, promote and develop the courses. Through these relationships the Trust is also able to provide a number of tailored or specialised courses.
