Houston Tree Expert Cautions Area Homeowners to Watch for Signs of Aphids’ Infestation

Arborist Louis Flory of Ability Tree Experts says drought weakened Texas trees are prime candidates for diseases and pest like Aphids.

Kingwood, TX, January 07, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Texas tree expert says drought weakened area trees are prime candidates for aphids’ and other tree disease infestations.

Louis Flory, owner of Kingwood based Ability Tree Experts (http://www.abilitytrees.com) says homeowners should watch for signs of disease and pest on their properties.

“Early detection of aphids and other diseases is important as it allows for quick eradication,” Flory said today.

Often referred to as plant lice, the aphid is a minute insect that feeds on plants such as fruits, vegetables, trees and flowers. They are approximately 1/8 inch in size with soft rounded bodies.

“Aphids can be black, red or green in color. The aphid is one of the fastest reproducing insect and can produce up to thirteen generations in one season,” Flory said.

He said adult aphids could produce three to six nymphs over the course of their lifetime and due to fast reproduction, populations can increase quickly resulting in full infestation in only a matter of days.

“These insects have the ability to become very nasty garden pests very quickly. They feed by sucking sap from plant tissue, which causes significant damage and spreads disease from one plant to another,” he added.

To know if you have aphids’ infestation, the Texas tree specialist said to watch for leaves covered with shiny sticky substances.

“The presence of the shiny sticky substance known as Honeydew, a waste material that is excreted after feeding, is a good sign that you have an aphid infestation,” he said.

“The honeydew substance will eventually cover the infested plant and turn into a black sooty mold that attracts large colonies of ants. The best way to determine an aphid infestation is to be aware of plant damage, which can include leaf curling, wilting and death of new shoots and buds,” he added.
