Bayer Polyurethane Solutions: Lighter. Stronger. Better.

Las Vegas, NV, February 24, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Polyurethane is inherently versatile and for decades has been successfully utilized in wide-ranging industries and applications. At Composites 2012 Bayer MaterialScience LLC will showcase polyurethane systems innovations expected to open new markets for polyurethane composites.

“As a leader in polyurethane chemistry and innovation, Bayer is always looking ahead with an eye toward ‘what’s next,’” said Fernando D’Andrea, director – Diversified Industries and Automotive Systems, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. “Attendees at Composites 2012 will have a firsthand look at some of the newest technologies we’re debuting at this conference. They will also see other successful applications that illustrate the many advantages polyurethanes offer over competing materials – advantages that include low VOCs, superior strength and light weight, to name just a few.”

At booth (#757) Bayer will highlight a number of processes and parts that exemplify the theme Bayer polyurethane solutions: Lighter. Stronger. Better. Here’s a sneak preview.

Resin Transfer Molding
Bayer will showcase several parts formed using the Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) and Resin Infusion processes, including a huge composite windmill root ring, two prototype airfoils and a high-pressure hydrogen storage tank. The airfoils, molded from a custom Baydur® RTM polyurethane system developed by Bayer specifically for this application, demonstrate one of the many potential applications and markets ideal for polyurethane RTM manufacturing.

Filament Winding
Two prototypes – a cylinder and a low-pressure bottle – formed through filament winding using a novel polyurethane formulation from Bayer, will be on display. These parts demonstrate the feasibility of forming high-performance cylindrical composite parts using custom-formulated polyurethane systems and the filament winding process.

Pultrusion
Polyurethane pultrusion has recently gained traction as processors and OEMs discover the many advantages of using this material in combination with this process. A number of pultruded polyurethane parts, including flooring and shelving modules from Conforce, and profiles from Pultrall, will be highlighted. Attendees interested in building and construction will find two pultruded polyurethane window products – a Graham Architectural Products’ GThurm™ window frame and a Deceuninck INNERGY™ rigid thermal enforcement window stiffener. Various shapes and colors of pultruded profiles will also be featured at the booth.

Long Fiber Injection
Visitors will also get a firsthand look at new, large combine roof modules. Measuring roughly 121 square feet in total, the roof modules were formed by Romeo RIM using its new LFI press – the largest in the world when installed last year. Other examples of parts formed using the long fiber injection process include two spa cabinet modules molded by Romeo RIM and Creative Urethanes, respectively.

Additionally, the booth will feature a load floor made out of the Baypreg® system and produced through the spray polyurethane process and RIM-molded solar panel modules. Also, to showcase the durability of polyurethanes, Bayer will feature a drop test video in its booth comparing the performance of a pultruded polyurethane “flat” to the same thickness flats made from traditional materials like various grades of carbon, stainless steel and PVC. Visitors also have the chance to walk away with a new 15-pound Brunswick “Twisted Fury Destruction” bowling ball being raffled off at Bayer’s booth.

Attendees will also see Bayer’s polyurethane expertise on display at booth #629, where Composites One will be molding parts live at the show using its “lean green machine” and Bayer’s polyurethane systems.
