ABC11 Eyewitness News Sponsors Fourth Annual Black History Parade in Mount Olive, N.C.

Anchor/Reporter Gilbert Baez Will Serve as Grand Marshal at Feb. 25 Event

Raleigh, NC, February 24, 2012 --( ABC11 Eyewitness News ( has announced that anchor/reporter Gilbert Baez will serve as the grand marshal for the upcoming Fourth Annual Black History Parade in Mount Olive, N.C., which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25. Featuring local bands, community groups and organizations, the parade will begin lining up at 11 a.m. on Michael Martin Road near Mount Olive College, with the parade running from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and ending at the former Carver High School on South Breazeale Avenue. Baez, a veteran and former combat communications officer at Ft. Bragg, N.C., will oversee the events of the parade, including a military tribute featuring members from Ft. Bragg’s airborne division. Celebrating and honoring African Americans throughout history, the parade will also include a reading of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

Mount Olive residents Vicky Darden and Sheila Oates have planned and hosted the parade since 2009 to conclude the month long celebration of Black History Month in Mount Olive and its surrounding communities. Last year, the parade featured 250 entries, making it one of the largest parades on the East Coast. A rain date is scheduled for Saturday, March 3.
