She also served as assistant to the president and chief of staff to former First Lady Hillary Clinton, as well as led the effort to establish the President’s Interagency Council on Women. Verveer received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Women’s Foreign Policy Group.

Xu established Chesapeake Bay Candle Company, one of the most popular candle brands around the world, in 1994. The company has six global locations and employs more than 2,000 people. In 2007, she launched Blissliving Home, a premium interior lifestyle brand for consumers seeking contemporary art, fashion and design.
