Samsung and Apple Responsible for Third of Handset Sales in 2nd Half of 2011 Confirms Mobileplease

Birmingham, United Kingdom, March 28, 2012 --(PR.com)-- A third of all mobile phones sold in the UK in the second half of 2011 were either a Samsung or Apple handset according to figures released Monday 26 March 2012 by mobile phone comparison site, Mobilesplease.

The figures are based on 30,000 handset sales made by leading online retailers the Dialaphone, Phones 4U and e2Save, between July and December 2011.

Samsung and Apple’s domination of the market has been attributed to the success of Samsung’s Galaxy S II handset and Apple’s iPhone 4S which quickly became one of the most compelling head-to-heads ever witnessed by the mobile phone fraternity.

“The Galaxy S II has elevated Samsung into the major leagues,” said Bobbie Bhogal, Managing Director of Mobilesplease. “Its large touchscreen and slim line body with an 8 megapixel camera positioned it as the leading alternative to the iPhone and it has more than matched its sales on Mobilesplease.co.uk.”

During the aforementioned six month sales period, 12% of all handset sales in the UK were accounted for by the Samsung Galaxy S II as opposed to 5% for Apple’s iPhone 4S. Their closest rival was the BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900, which notched up sales of 2%.

Although the Galaxy S II produced the most individual sales, collectively, it was the full Apple range of iPhones that dominated capturing 19% of the market against Samsung’s 14%.
