Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG) Donates Time and Money to the On-Going Rwanda Civil War Relief and Recovery Efforts

Rebuilding in the aftermath of the Rwandan Civil War and Genocide still requires support and expertise from a wide variety of sources and WEG employees are contributing their time and expertise in the recovery efforts.

Williamsburg, VA, March 31, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Mr. Daniel Malone, L.A., an employee of Williamsburg Environmental Group, Inc. (WEG), a local environmental consulting and engineering firm, recently took “a vacation with a difference.” Last month, Daniel traveled to Rwanda, Africa with a team of a dozen design professionals from the non-profit organization, Engineering Ministries International (eMi). eMi is made up of volunteers and provides free engineering and architectural design services to third world countries and organizations helping the poor and oppressed.

On the job or in their communities, employees of WEG are always looking for ways to make a difference in the lives of others. This commitment to the spirit of giving recently took Daniel to Rwanda where he volunteered twelve days of his vacation time to help design a site master plan for a Rwandan non-profit group, Gate of Hope, the site included a school, safe house, counseling center, church, and production agricultural gardens. When complete, the site will benefit hundreds of individuals / families and empower them to live a more economically stable and socially connected life. “Vacations with a purpose such as this are a really good way to help me hone my landscape architecture skills and also bless people who are most able to benefit from what my profession offers,” said Daniel.

Daniel has more than a decade of comprehensive experience in landscape architecture and planning and has worked extensively designing site plans for drainage and stormwater use. As a seasoned landscape architect, Daniel was part of the Architecture Team for this Rwandan project. His contributions included site design and planning for grading and drainage, as well as conceptual landscaping. The rolling topography of Rwanda provided a few challenges and several local Rwandan engineering students were able to learn from Daniel’s experience on how best to navigate this terrain.

Before Daniel left for Africa, fellow WEG colleagues worked to raise funds to help subsidize his out-of-pocket travel expenses. Through bake sales, sponsored lunches, and personal donations, they collectively raised over $500 (enough to cover the many immunizations needed for the Africa visit).

One local-area business went above and beyond the call for support. Buon Amici Ristorante & Pizzeria (located next door to WEG’s Corporate Offices in New Town, Williamsburg) donated a dozen pies at lunch time to help raise money in support of Mr. Malone’s charitable efforts.

WEG’s Principals made a matching contribution of another $500. Corporate staff presented the total $1,000 fundraising / donation to Daniel at WEG’s Williamsburg office.

WEG hopes that Daniel’s time and expertise, along with all of the design team’s efforts, will enhance and expedite Rwanda’s recovery.
