National Portable Storage Association Looks Outside the Box

Containerized storage serves as a strong foundation for many newfangled uses, from portable restrooms to high-tech security checkpoints. Innovation continues to drive the industry.

Kansas City, MO, May 28, 2007 --(PR.com)-- A recent news article in the Herald-Dispatch discussed some ‘out of the box’ uses for portable storage, such as portable restrooms, extra-high security storage containers, and vending booths. Indeed, the possibilities are virtually endless for portable storage units.

“Just as Malcolm McLean came up with the idea of standardizing a metal box to move cargo by land and sea over 50 years ago, 21st century innovators are morphing containerized storage into innovative new products,” said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the National Portable Storage Association, or NPSA, a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. “I can’t wait to see what NPSA members come up with next.”

Portable restrooms are getting a makeover, for example, by tapping into the benefits of portable storage units. Modifying containerized storage offers luxuries that traditional portable potties don’t, such as freshwater and sewage holding tanks that allow the users to flush the commode and then wash their hands with either hot or cold water. The portable storage-modified restrooms even allow for cooling and heating, which makes for a more comfortable experience in summer and winter alike.

Container modifications may also include vending booths, first-aid booths for traveling medical staff, explosion-proof offices for refineries, portable labs for researchers in the field and even security checkpoints equipped with surveillance cameras, metal and explosion detection technologies, and biotechnology bells and whistles. Of course, portable storage can still be used for mobile offices, during moves, to store additional inventory, equipment or records or other goods.

“Portable storage containers are versatile,” said NPSA Operations Manager Joel Rathbone. “Container modification companies are coming up with new uses all the time and we expect the innovation to continue. These securable, steel containers offer a strong foundation for many uses, as the market is demonstrating.”
