Swim Across America to Host Second Annual Dallas Open Water Swim Event on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at The Harbor at Lake Ray Hubbard

Dallas, TX, April 04, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Swim Across America (SAA), a national non-profit organization dedicated to raising money for cancer research, prevention and treatment through swimming events throughout the country, will host its second annual open water swim event on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at The Harbor at Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall, Texas.

The fundraiser will benefit the new Innovative Clinical Trials Center, which is scheduled to open later this summer, at Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center in Dallas, the largest outpatient cancer center in North Texas dedicated to cancer care, research and education.

Nearly 220 swimmers and 13 former Olympians participated in last year's event and raised more than $350,000, putting the event $100,000 over its goal. This year, the committee aims to raise $400,000 through the participation of 400 swimmers. The event also has secured a Title Sponsor for 2012, the Texas 7-Eleven Franchise Owners Association, which has committed to bring in more than $25,000 for SAA through a golf tournament as well as the sale of donation cards in DFW-area stores.

"What we achieved last year was incredible," said Daniel Watters, Swim Across America Dallas co-chair, and a former swimmer on the 1988 Olympic team. "We set our sights high, but this year we're hoping to blow that amount out of the water, so to speak." Watters will be joined by co-chairs Andrea Hayes Dickson, also a member of the 1988 Olympic team, and Jeanne Cunningham, a former member of the University of Texas swim team, along with several former Olympians including gold medalists Ryan Berube, Brad Bridgewater, Josh Davis, Jim Montgomery, and Neil Walker who will serve on the event planning committee.

Swimmers must raise a minimum of $500 in order to participate in the ½-mile, 1-mile or 2-mile course at Lake Ray Hubbard. They may swim individually, or as part of a team to honor friends and family that have been touched by cancer.

"We are excited to work with Swim Across America again to benefit not only cancer patients but also our ongoing research which is so critical," said Dr. Alan Miller, medical director, Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center and chief of oncology, Baylor Health Care System. "The money raised through this event will provide hope to those who have exhausted all other options for cancer treatment."

In Swim Across America's 25th anniversary year, Dallas joins cities such as Boston, New York, Baltimore and San Francisco in hosting swim events. To date, SAA events have brought in more than $40 million nationwide for the mission of finding a cure for cancer.
