inSHAPE Fitness Partners with The Institute for Leadership to Fight Diabetes

Fitness Guru Kim Watkins Designs Safe Work Out Routine to Encourage People with Diabetes to Get Active

New York, NY, April 13, 2012 --(PR.com)-- inSHAPE Fitness has partnered with The Institute for Leadership as part of an innovative pilot program to help people enrolled in the Faith Fights Diabetes program to learn the basics of exercising in a short, 10-minute routine that can be done safely in the comfort of their own homes.

Kim Watkins, co-founder and head trainer of the inSHAPE Fitness, says “by helping program participants learn the basic principles of posture, control, and simple moves, they can safely do these exercises in their own home as we help them make the transition from sedentary lifestyles without the need of a gym or expensive equipment.”

The Rev. Michel Faulkner, founder and president of the Institute For Leadership, which runs the successful Faith Fights Diabetes Program designed to give participants the tools to manage the disease, said he was excited about the potential of the pilot program.

“Through these simple fitness and wellness moves designed by Kim and her inSHAPE team, we can offer participants more healthy options by teaching them ways to get moving that are safe, simple and fun,” Faulkner said. “Our hope is that they will continue this routine and adopt healthier lifestyles that will help reverse their symptoms of diabetes and prevent avoidable complications such as blindness, amputations, cardiovascular and kidney disease.”

Under the IFL’s Faith Fights Diabetes program, started with a grant from the New York State Health Foundation as part of their statewide Diabetes Campaign, participants complete a six-week training session conducted at places of worship and community centers to learn about diet, exercise and how to better manage their diabetes to live healthier lives.

To date, inSHAPE Fitness has completed five fitness programs with Faith Fights Diabetes and will continue the innovative pilot program throughout the spring season. The program aims to equip those who have been identified as “high risk” for diabetes and those with diabetes, within local places of worship, with the necessary tools needed to live healthier and longer lives.

Watkins said: “Community groups are the lifeblood of social change in our city, so what better way to help the greatest number of motivated individuals than in their local places of worship. Pastor Faulkner and I worked together two years ago when he trained for the NYC Marathon, so when the opportunity came up for inSHAPE to partner with the IFL’s Faith Fights Diabetes program, I jumped at the chance.”
