The growth of technology by leaps and bounds in the last decade has made the world smaller. It has also proven to open new doors of business opportunity for some. Many modern transactions have gone mobile and now even an English class can be done via Blackberry Messenger.

Gilda Sagrado a businesswoman in Bali sees the growth of IT as a business opportunity. Early April, she launched the world's first Blackberry Messenger-based English course. Within that launch month, more than 1000 students registered.

She explained, Blackberry English Course (BEC) had succeeded in giving solution to a segment of market that had not been served by regular English courses available every where on the island of Bali - the busy people who cannot find the time to sit for two hours every Mondays and Wednesdays in a classroom, to listen to an English teacher. Launched in Bali, BEC surprisingly has students also from all over Indonesia, the reach is extensive and borderless, only possible with today's mobile technology.

Gilda Sagrado, director of BEC observed how the new lifestyle in Indonesia so dependent on Blackberry can be now leveraged onto education. Blackberry can become an extremely useful tool. "This is a solution for those busy people who want to learn English in a convenient and affordable way. An English course in Indonesia ranges from Rp 200.000 per month to Rp 3million for a package course, whilst BEC charges a fraction of that at Rp 5.000 per month to Rp 150.000 package course," she said. The low operational cost using IT has allowed BEC to charge less for the same course materials.

Gilda continued, "For those who want to learn English on Blackberry, they simply need to invite BEC as one of their Bbm contacts. They then send through Bbm, the picture of their proof of payment and they would be immediately enrolled to receive course materials. It is that easy."

There are two types of course at the launch of BEC and Gilda hopes to bring it to ten types by the end of 2012. In June, BEC will open English for Tourism via Bbm Group where a teacher will be present to answer questions from students, all conversations via a handset.

Ardi Harsonni who has just joined BEC said he is glad to enroll in a course that has not restricted his time and place. "I can learn English while waiting for a technician to repair my motorcycle, while accompanying my mother to shop or while having a dinner gathering with friends. English is fun but if you ask me to sit in a class for hours to listen to a teacher, that is not fun!" he snorted.

He confessed to have difficulty to be present in a classroom regularly every week, even though he wants to learn. "It is difficult to find time to attend a class. With BEC, I can quickly master English where ever I am!" said Putu Eka a young Balinese businessman who likes to learn but has a busy social life that limits him.
