)-- Fifty years ago the world was rocked by the untimely death of legendary Hollywood starlet Marilyn Monroe. Many things that bore her likeness quickly became collector’s items, and wine was no exception.
Specialty auction house WineGavel will recognize the historic half-century anniversary of the actress’ death by including in their May auction a rare 1st edition 1985 bottle of Marilyn Merlot from the stand up vertical series.
“This specific series of wine is prized for the unique labels,” said WineGavel President Matt Carson. “For pop-culture collectors, it is a highly sought after item and is also a wonderful gift for the die-hard Marilyn Monroe enthusiast. This is the most valuable vintage in the set with the starting bid at only $700. Other bottles of this same vintage have retailed for as high as $1,000.”
Much of the collection in the May online auction comes from a Bay Area couple who have been dedicated wine drinkers and collectors during the 70’s through the 90’s. Each wine was chosen carefully based on drinkability and enjoyment and provenance is pristine; all bottles were properly stored in a temperature-controlled home cellar.
“Our auctions provide an opportunity for the seasoned collector and true wine aficionado to obtain rare wine treasures with ease,” said Carson. “Every bottle offered is thoroughly inspected and of sound provenance.”
WineGavel will also offer other varietals from the Marilyn Merlot series, ranging anywhere from $70 to $900.
