World-Class Life Science Organization and Campus Launches to Aid in Research and Drug Development

Research Triangle Park, NC, June 08, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Dr. William F. Greenlee, president and CEO of CIIT, Centers for Health Research, has announced the launch of The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences, an independent, nonprofit organization that offers an open, collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach to strengthen the research investment in biomedical sciences. Dr. Greenlee will serve as the president and chief executive officer of The Hamner, while Dr. Charles Hamner, the namesake of the organization, will serve as the chair of The Hamner Board of Directors.

The Hamner formally launched at a gala event held June 7 on its campus, featuring remarks by local and regional officials including N.C. Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue. Greenlee and Hamner discussed the organization’s mission to create a world-class, preeminent sciences research and education institute. Greenlee and management staff from CIIT, realized that there was a larger need to create a life sciences campus where academic, private sector and government organizations could collaborate in a high-density environment to expedite the translation of discoveries in the laboratory to new medicines and life science technologies for the betterment of human health.

CIIT remains as an institute under the umbrella of The Hamner to be joined by two future institutes, the Institute for Translational Biomedical Sciences and a business accelerator facility. Within the Institute for Translational Biomedical Sciences will be the Center for Molecular Safety Science, which focuses on researching the cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease by applying new systems biology molecular methods, genomics and proteomics with tissue culture methods to build predictive tools for detection and treatment of human disease.

A capital campaign will launch in the coming months to help fund the development and expansion of the planned institutes and The Hamner Campus. In addition to the previously named institutes, the campus will include an auditorium, restaurants and a library. These features will facilitate the goal of the campus, which is to create a high-density of top research minds that can collaborate in formal and casual settings.

“I am excited to see our vision come to life with the launch of The Hamner. It has been many years of hard work and planning to make this vision a reality and I am proud of everyone that devoted their time to help make this happen,” said Dr. Greenlee. “The Hamner offers the unique opportunity for public, private, and academic organizations to collaborate and expedite public health research and advancements.”

“It is an honor to lend my name to an organization that will have such an important impact, not only on research, but translating that research at a faster rate into public health breakthroughs,” said Dr. Hamner. “I look forward to utilizing my past leadership experiences to help guide this organization in its development and growth.”
