Kingsport Chamber Awards 2012 Santa Train Scholarship to Kashenna Wolford

Kingsport, TN, June 02, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The Kingsport Chamber of Commerce is proud to award its 2012 Santa Train Scholarship to Kashenna Wolford, a 2012 graduate of Phelps High School, Phelps, KY. The four-year scholarship is worth $5,000.

Wolford is an honor student at Phelps High and is ranked second in her senior class with a 3.8 grade point average upon graduation.

“Kashenna has an excellent work ethic that is second to none and a desire to always do her very best,” said Patrick Lester, Phelps High School academic team coach.

In Wolford’s scholarship essay, she says, “I have devoted my life to break the chain of my family’s past.” She said partying took priority over education and despite her family’s negative choices, they have influenced her to become who she is today. “My education has been my number one priority in my life.”

In addition, to her academics, Wolford devotes her free time to athletics, clubs and volunteering.

She was active throughout her high school career being a member of various student organizations and clubs including: Beta Club, National Honor Society, Pike County Youth Leadership Council, Future Business Leaders of America, Fellow Christian Athletes and the captain of her basketball, softball and volleyball teams.

“She is truly an outstanding leader and possesses the ability to work well with all students and to make everyone around her better,” Lester added.

Most of her free time is spent volunteering with a local church or at her high school’s basketball camp. To date, her most touching volunteer experience was helping tornado disaster victims (March 2012) gather personal belongings, picking up debris, siding and insulation on the ground and on the nearby mountain. In addition, Wolford also volunteers at the local nursing home and hospital.

She has received a variety of awards such as, the academic award for cheerleading and basketball for the 60th District in 2012 and was the marshal in the graduation for the class of 2012.

Wolford is the youngest of three siblings and the first in her family to attend college. Due to her father’s disability and family’s set income, college was not a possibility without a significant amount of student loans.

“I am incredibility thankful for the Santa Train Scholarship,” stated Wolford. “This allows me to pursue my dreams and attend college.”

Wolford plans on attending Morehead State University located in Morehead, KY this fall where she will pursue a degree in Radiology/Imaging Sciences.

She will be introduced to the Kingsport Chamber Board of Directors on Monday, July 9 at 4 p.m. located in the Kingsport Chamber’s Eastman Board Room.

The Kingsport Chamber of Commerce awards its Santa Train Scholarship to a graduating senior attending high school along the 110-mile Santa Train route that runs from Kingsport to Pikeville, KY.

Recipients are chosen based upon grade point average, financial need, extracurricular activities, work records and an advisor’s recommendation. Wolford is the twenty-ninth (29) recipient since the first scholarship was awarded in 1989 totaling $145,000.

Co-sponsored by the Kingsport Chamber, CSX Transportation and Food City the Santa Train is an annual 110-mile train journey through Appalachia where volunteers from Kingsport take 15 tons of gifts, clothes, candies and toys to children in Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.

The Santa Train is now in its 70th year and will run Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012.

Started as a way for area businesses to thank their patrons, the train now accepts physical and monetary donations, including new clothes and new toys. Financial gifts from the public have helped establish the Santa Train Scholarship for students who live along the train’s route.

Please send physical or monetary donations to the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce - Attn: Santa Train – 400 Clinchfield Street, Ste. 100 – Kingsport, TN, 37660 by the first week of November to ensure toys make it on the 2012 train.
