Pune, India, June 05, 2012 --(PR.com)-- - More than 75% of the organisations in a recent survey rate collaboration applications as important as other traditional applications
- 44% of organisations have chosen to expand their collaborative mobile access
- 22% of organisations use Open Source Software (OSS) for their growing IT requirements; huge opportunity for OSS as it assures information security

Collaboration IT infrastructure has become an essential tool for businesses today. With large amounts of vital and confidential information flowing through an organisation’s network server, it is imperative that employees who are spread across geographies have access to it at the right time. More than 75% of the organisations in a recent survey rate collaboration applications more than, or equally important as, other traditional applications.

This was one of the findings in a report by Mithi Software Technologies, co-authored by ValueNotes (a market intelligence and consulting firm). The report, titled Trends in Collaboration Technology & Open Source Software, captured the opinions of IT decision-makers in organisations across industries in India regarding the feasibility and future of open source software (OSS) and collaboration IT infrastructure.

Collaboration infrastructure refers to the IT set up that enables employees’ access to the right resources at the right time, across different workspaces. The priority in India today is mobile access. The immediate plan of 44% of the organisations surveyed is to expand their mobile collaboration applications. A majority of them (70%) identified Android as a desirable platform for their collaboration needs, compared to 26% for BlackBerry and 15% for iPhone. “Surprisingly,” says Mr Arun Jethmalani, Managing Director of ValueNotes, “only 11% of organisations have more than a fourth of their field workforce accessing collaboration applications via mobile devices. There is indeed much scope for mobile collaboration applications in the years to come.”

With growing competition and pressures on margins, it is becoming essential for organisations to control costs. At the same time, CIOs are looking at bringing in flexibility in their IT infrastructure by introducing open standards based systems into their networks. “Nearly 22% of organisations use OSS predominantly for tapping their growing IT requirements,” says Mr Tarun Malaviya, CEO of Mithi Software Technologies. “This presents a huge opportunity as proprietary licensed or patented software can take a back seat given that OSS assures information security,” he added.

Notes: The report is based on a survey of 100 participants - CXOs, IT strategy consultants, IT managers, finance executives and solution partners - from diverse industry verticals including BFSI, manufacturing, IT, telecom, healthcare, government, and education.
