Buro Happold's New Principal Expands Civil Engineering Expertise for North America

New York, NY, June 13, 2012 --(PR.com)-- The New York office of international multi-disciplinary engineering firm Buro Happold welcomes civil engineer Neil Porto, PE, as principal, effective June 4. Porto brings a broad depth of expertise in civil and structural engineering to new and existing Buro Happold projects, such as the third section of the High Line, St. Petersburg Pier in Florida, and Chicago’s historic Navy Pier. Porto has worked for 25 years in technical and management roles on a variety of high-profile transportation, highway, bridge, and waterfront engineering projects, such as the East River Esplanade and Piers Project (in his previous role at HDR|Daniel Frankfurt).

Craig Schwitter, PE, Buro Happold’s Managing Director for North America, said, “Our New York office has a strong reputation for building services, and we’re delighted to welcome Neil Porto, whose experience complements and rounds out our team. Buro Happold is positioned to do work of all scales, from buildings, to infrastructure, to cities. Neil understands the importance of the big picture as well as the details of large, complex projects. His vision fits perfectly with our approach.”

Throughout his career, Porto has collaborated with world-class designers – such as SHoP and Ken Smith – on projects that have improved the public realm, and he has overseen the sustainable development of cities. He has effectively managed high-profile projects that required intensive multidisciplinary and interagency coordination. His engineering knowledge and community-building skills enable him to expertly execute large projects while fine-tuning the details.

Before joining Buro Happold, Porto was Vice President and Senior Project Manager at HDR|Daniel Frankfurt. He has worked for numerous public agencies and community organizations throughout his career, including the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and the United States Peace Corps. Porto holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from Cornell University School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
